Colored pencil drawing of mountains in black and brown. Water flows under the mountains in teal and blue. The background is grey and grainy, as if underground.

This is the Gurnu, the threshing floor. In some translations of the ancient texts, it is through the Gurnu that the Rapi’uma, souls of the ancestors, travel. They come upon their chariots through the Gurnu to assist the living, when necessary.  Often the deceased are buried in a tomb under the family's home, and the families would have made offerings to their ancestors there. They were and are saluted at a marzichu. The Rapi’uma are our ancestors, our beloved departed, they are the shades. They are friends, family, enemies, strangers, royalty, and destitute.
